Changzhou, on the southern bank of the Yangtze River in Jiangsu Province, is the birthplace of Zhou Youguang, who created the pinyin romanization system. The Grand Canal passes through the city, which sits roughly equidistant between Shanghai, Nanjing, and Hangzhou, with Lake Tai to the south and the Maoshan and Tianmu ranges within reach. A documented history stretching back over three thousand years gives the city a substantial heritage record alongside its role as a major transit hub in the Yangtze River Delta.
