Known as China's "fossil city," Chaoyang in western Liaoning Province has yielded some of the most significant Early Cretaceous paleontological finds on record, including two ancient bird species — Longipteryx chaoyangensis and Sapeornis chaoyangensis — named after the city. The Harqin region within its territory is considered the oldest known prehistoric site in northern China. The Da Ling River runs through the city's centre, with hilly terrain and mountains nearby, and the wider prefecture borders both Hebei Province and Inner Mongolia.
