Chaviaes

A small settlement in the municipality of Melgaço, in Portugal's Viana do Castelo District, set in mountain terrain with vineyards nearby. Its name is thought to derive from the Roman *Flavianes* or *Flavianus*, evolving over centuries to its current form, with one interpretation meaning "at the gates of the wall." Now part of the merged parish of Chaviães e Paços, formed in 2013, it retains a modest central core with cafés and restaurants.
