Founded in 1262, Chinguetti is a historic town in Mauritania's Adrar region that served for centuries as a major departure point for pilgrimage caravans heading to Mecca via Egypt and Sudan — a role that deepened its ties across the Arab and Islamic world. The old city is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and the surrounding desert landscape brings visitors close to both dunes and highland terrain.
