Chiquimula
Guatemala
The colonial ruins of the Chiquimula de la Sierra church, destroyed by an earthquake on 2 June 1765 and abandoned since, stand as the city's most distinctive landmark — preserving traces of their former scale despite more than two and a half centuries of neglect. The city's Ch'orti' name means "land of birds," and it sits in eastern Guatemala's mountains within reach of UNESCO World Heritage sites in the wider region.
