Mountain town on the Chitral River in Pakistan's far north, sitting in the shadow of Tirich Mir — the highest peak in the Hindu Kush — and sharing a border with Afghanistan's Wakhan Corridor. The capital of Lower Chitral District, it was formerly the seat of the Chitral princely state and is noted for a distinct local culture and a linguistic diversity that includes more than a dozen languages spoken in the surrounding district.
