Choibalsan is the administrative centre of Mongolia's easternmost province, Dornod, and one of the country's larger towns outside Ulaanbaatar. Known since 1941 by its current name — before that it was Bayantuumen — the town has a more industrial character than most Mongolian provincial capitals, with a history of meat processing, carpet manufacturing, and wool-washing industries. The Kherlen River runs nearby, and mountains are visible from the town.
