Chongjin
North Korea
Known as the "City of Iron," Chongjin is North Korea's third-largest city and its most significant heavy industrial centre, built around steel production on the northeastern coast. Opened as a port in 1908, it grew from a fishing village into a major hub under Japanese rule and later under the North Korean government. The city sits against the Hamgyong mountain range and holds a rare distinction in North Korea: active consulates from both China and Russia.
