Cienfuegos, on Cuba's southern coast, holds a UNESCO World Heritage-listed historic centre recognised as the finest surviving example of early 19th-century Spanish Enlightenment urban planning in the Americas. The downtown sits right on the bay of Jagua, with a walkable centre dense with cafés and restaurants and a skyline of buildings commissioned by Catalan and Asturian merchants who grew wealthy in the sugar trade. Known as La Perla del Sur, the city also serves as one of Cuba's main industrial centres in the energy and sugar sectors.
