Founded in 910 by Duke William I of Aquitaine, the Benedictine Abbey of Cluny shaped this little Burgundian town into one of medieval Europe's great centres of spiritual renewal, and its surviving church and monastic buildings remain the main draw today. The surrounding Saône-et-Loire countryside is vineyard country, and the town itself supports a café and restaurant scene well above its size, with Romanesque houses, a 15th-century Museum of Art and Archaeology, and the Tour des Fromages adding to the historic fabric.
