Comayagua
Honduras
Founded in 1537 as Villa de Santa María de la Nueva Valladolid de Comayagua, this former capital of Honduras served as the country's seat of government until 1880 and retains an exceptional concentration of Spanish Colonial architecture. The cathedral on the central square houses what is said to be the oldest clock in the Americas. Several historic churches, colonial plazas, and museums fill a compact, walkable centre with cafés and restaurants, and the city draws particular attention during Semana Santa as Honduras's main destination for religious tourism.
