Comitán de Domínguez
Comitán de Domínguez · Mexico
Birthplace of the writer Rosario Castellanos, whose novel *Balún Canán* takes its name from the city's ancient Maya designation meaning "place of the nine stars," Comitán de Domínguez is a colonial city in eastern Chiapas, near the Guatemalan border. Its name derives from a Nahuatl word meaning "place of potters," and it holds a mix of neoclassical, baroque, and neo-Gothic architecture along narrow streets. The city also played a founding role in Chiapas's independence from Spain.
