Founded in 1619 by the Jesuit priest Roque González de Santa Cruz, Concepción de la Sierra in Misiones Province, north-eastern Argentina, sits on the site of one of the region's earliest Jesuit reductions, with ruins of that colonial heritage still visible in and around the town. Each November the town hosts the Fiesta Nacional del Tarefero, a nationally recognised festival honouring the workers who harvest yerba mate, the area's principal crop. A river beach on the edge of town offers calm, clear water for swimming and camping.
