Once one of Bolivia's most important copper-mining centres, Coro Coro sits high on the altiplano in the La Paz Department's Pacajes Province, where the Corocoro United Copper Mines operated until their closure in 1985. The town's territory takes in several natural landmarks, including the salt lake of Jayuma Llallawa and the condor site of Kuntur Jipiña, as well as the church of Caquingora. The area is also associated with the origins of the ch'uta character and its traditional dance.
