Small Central Otago town on the shore of Lake Dunstan, Cromwell sits at the heart of New Zealand's Central Otago wine region and is surrounded by orchards known for stone fruit. The old town centre, partially flooded when the Clyde Dam created Lake Dunstan in the 1980s and 1990s, survives as a historic precinct at the water's edge. The Highlands Motorsport Park and the Lake Dunstan Trail, opened in 2013 and 2021 respectively, add to the town's draw for visitors passing through between Queenstown and the wider region.
