Founded as a parish in 1733 on Colombia's border with Venezuela, Cúcuta is a large Andean city that played a central role in the formation of both modern nations — hosting the Battle of Cúcuta in 1813 and the Congress of 1821 that produced Colombia's first constitution. The city's historic centre holds a notable concentration of Catholic churches, including the Cathedral of San José, whose image of Our Lady of Cúcuta survived the earthquake of 1875. Today it remains the main urban hub of the Colombian-Venezuelan border region.
