Cuenca
Cuenca · Spain
Cuenca's old town, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996, occupies a narrow escarpment between the Júcar and Huécar rivers, with the famous Casas Colgadas — medieval houses that appear to hang over the gorge — as its defining image. The historic centre holds a cathedral, more than ten museums including the Museo de Arte Abstracto Español, and a walkable concentration of churches, all within a compact area. The city traces its origins to a Moorish fortress conquered by Alfonso VIII of Castile in 1177.
