This coastal city on the northwest shore of Hainan Island, Danzhou faces the Beibu Gulf and sits within reach of the island's interior hills. The economic and cultural hub of western Hainan, it serves as a base for exploring this less-visited side of China's southernmost province. The city's administrative centre is Nada Town, and it was elevated to prefecture-level city status in 2015.
