This Mediterranean coastal city in northeastern Libya where the Green Mountains meet the sea, Darnah is divided by the Wadi Darnah river and fed by two freshwater springs, including the Ain al-Balad and the Bou Mansour waterfall. Greek, Roman, Arab, Ottoman, and Italian civilizations have each left their mark here, and the city was the site of the 1805 Battle of Derna, the first engagement fought by the United States military on foreign soil. In September 2023, the collapse of the Darnah dam during Storm Daniel destroyed a significant portion of the city and killed thousands of residents.
