Syria
Sitting on the Euphrates in eastern Syria, Deir ez-Zor is the largest city in the region and the administrative capital of its governorate. A historic caravan stop on the Aleppo–Baghdad route, it grew into a significant urban centre after being designated a provincial seat in 1865, and expanded further following oil discoveries in the 1980s. The surrounding countryside holds archaeological sites, and fertile Euphrates riverbanks support wheat and cotton farming across the wider governorate.
