Debre Tabor
Ethiopia
Debre Tabor served as the capital of Ethiopia in the 19th century under Emperor Tewodros and then Emperor Yohannes IV, and the church of Debre Lueluan Medhanealem — founded by Tewodros and still the episcopal seat of the South Gondar diocese — remains a central landmark. The city was established in the 14th century by Emperor Zara Yaqob's predecessor Seyfe Arad, with the Tabor Iyesus church built on the surrounding mountain. Set among mountains a short drive from Lake Tana, Debre Tabor carries a substantial place in Ethiopian imperial history.
