Founded in 1947 as a planned socialist model city, Dimitrovgrad is one of Bulgaria's few purpose-built communist-era towns, laid out along the Maritsa River in the Thrace region of Haskovo Province. Named for Bulgaria's first communist leader, Georgi Dimitrov, the town retains its mid-20th-century urban design alongside the river, with mountains within reach and Haskovo, the provincial capital, a short distance away.
