Dingxi, a large city in central Gansu province, sits at the junction of the West Qinling mountains and the Loess Plateau, where the Tao River runs through its western reaches and the Wei River has its source in Weiyuan County. A historic stop on the ancient Silk Road and sometimes called the "eastern gateway" to the provincial capital Lanzhou, the city is also officially designated China's "hometown of potatoes," a crop central to the local agricultural economy.
