Dolores Hidalgo

Declared by the Mexican Congress as the Cradle of National Independence, Dolores Hidalgo is a colonial town in the highlands of Guanajuato where, in the early hours of 16 September 1810, the local parish priest Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla delivered the Grito de Dolores from the church atrium, launching Mexico's war of independence. The town was renamed in his honour after independence was achieved, and was designated a Pueblo Mágico in 2002. UNESCO World Heritage sites lie within the wider region.
