Drobeta-Turnu Severin
Romania
Drobeta-Turnu Severin sits on the northern bank of the Danube near the Iron Gates, with a walkable centre full of cafés and restaurants. The city's name carries layers of history: Drobeta was the ancient Dacian and Roman settlement here, declared a municipium under Hadrian in 121 AD and later raised to a colony under Septimius Severus, making its inhabitants equal in rights to citizens of Rome. The medieval Severin fortress, built by the Kingdom of Hungary, was destroyed by the Ottoman Empire in 1526. The modern city was formally re-founded in 1833.
