A town on the right bank of the Danube south of Budapest, Dunaújváros is one of the most coherent surviving examples of early post-war Eastern European architecture and urban planning — built from scratch in the 1950s around a small village, originally named Sztálinváros, and laid out in the Socialist Realist and Socialist Modernist styles with an unusually generous provision of parks. The site also has Roman roots, as the ancient settlement of Intercisa once stood here. The walkable centre has a good range of cafés and restaurants, and the Danube waterfront adds scenic appeal.
