Dunqulah al Qadimah
Sudan
Once the medieval capital of the Nubian kingdom of Makuria, Dunqulah al Qadimah sits on the eastern bank of the Nile in Sudan's Northern State. The town holds a mosque considered among the oldest in Africa, and some Muslim scholars have called it "the bride of the Quran" for its place in Islamic history. The urban centre shifted northward during the 19th century to become modern Dunqulah, leaving this older settlement as a site of historical significance on the Nile.
