Founded in 1821 on the left bank of the Yi River in central Uruguay, Durazno is the departmental capital where the edge of town gives way quickly to open countryside — a short walk from the centre puts you within earshot of livestock and well within sight of rural Uruguay at its most unguarded. Shops, restaurants, and historic buildings fill the compact centre, and the confluence of two major national routes makes it a practical base for exploring the country's interior.
