The part of Jerusalem east of the 1949 Green Line, East Jerusalem holds the walled Old City and some of the most significant religious sites in the world for Judaism, Christianity, and Islam — among them the Temple Mount and Al-Aqsa Mosque, the Western Wall, the Dome of the Rock, and the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. Key concentrations of historic sites extend across the City of David, Mount Zion, and the Mount of Olives. Its political status remains contested: many states recognize it as the capital of Palestine, while it has been under Israeli occupation since 1967.
