Maya town in the heart of Quintana Roo's "Maya Zone," Felipe Carrillo Puerto was founded by the Maya as Noj Kaaj Santa Cruz and served as the stronghold of the cruzo'ob Maya during the Caste War. The Sanctuary of the Speaking Cross stands here, and more than 70% of residents still speak Mayan today. The Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve lies just to the east.
