City in the southern Fergana Valley at the foot of the Alay Mountains, with a walkable centre full of cafés and restaurants. Founded as Yangi Marghilan under Russian imperial rule, it was renamed Skobelev in 1907 before taking its current name in 1924. The administrative and cultural capital of Fergana Region, it sits in highland terrain with mountains visible from the city and water a short drive away.
