Flying Fish Cove, named after a British survey ship, has served as the capital and main settlement of Christmas Island since its founding in 1888. The compact harbour accommodates visiting yachts, and the beach offers recreational diving. The settlement encompasses three distinct villages — Drumsite, Silver City, and Poon Saan — and sits near the island's north-eastern tip, within reach of the surrounding mountain terrain.
