Fort Beaufort
South Africa
KwaMaqoma (formerly Fort Beaufort) sits on the Kat River at the foot of the Winterberg mountains in South Africa's Eastern Cape, established in 1837 as one of the older towns on the region's former frontier. The town is the birthplace of Raymond Mhlaba, anti-apartheid activist and first Premier of the Eastern Cape. It lies close to Fort Hare University in nearby Alice and to Sulphur Springs, with UNESCO World Heritage sites in the wider region.
