A coastal municipality in Algeria's Tipaza province, Fouka sits on the Mediterranean and is thought to be built on the ruins of the ancient Roman city of Casae Calventi. The French colonial settlement was established in 1842 by military engineers, with a royal decree following in 1846 to found the village of Notre-Dame de Fouka. The wider Tipaza region holds several UNESCO World Heritage sites, and mountains are visible from the area.
