Nicknamed "Freedom City," Frederiksted is a small town on the western end of St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands, where the emancipation of enslaved people in the Danish West Indies was proclaimed on July 3, 1848, at Fort Frederik on the waterfront. That 18th-century fort, built to defend against pirates and rival colonial powers, still stands, and the town's grid-planned streets hold several historic churches alongside government buildings in historic structures. Frederiksted is also St. Croix's sole cruise ship port, with beaches within easy reach of the pier.
