Fujairah
United Arab Emirates
The only emirate with a coastline on the Gulf of Oman rather than the Persian Gulf, Fujairah sits at the foothills of the Hajar Mountains on the UAE's east coast, with the sea within walking distance of the centre. The youngest of the seven emirates, having gained independence from Sharjah only in 1952, it serves as both an industrial hub and a city with a walkable centre and a real café and restaurant scene.
