Gǝdǝbǝy
Azerbaijan
A tiny town in western Azerbaijan set on the Mis River at the northern foot of the Shahdagh range, Gǝdǝbǝy sits at high elevation with mountains rising above it, including one peak exceeding 3,000 metres. Copper has been mined from the nearby Maghara mountain since the 19th century — a fact the town marks on its modern coat of arms with the chemical symbol "Cu." Ancient monuments in the area include Qiz Qalasi, Koroglu Qalasi, and the historic Siemens bridges.
