This highland city in southeastern Afghanistan whose name derives from the Persian word for "treasure," Ghazni has drawn travelers and archaeologists for centuries to its Citadel, the Minarets of Ghazni, and the Palace of Sultan Mas'ud III. Once the capital of the Ghaznavid Empire under Sabuktigin in the 10th century, the city sits high on a plateau along the ancient Kabul–Kandahar Highway, with mountains close by and a working bazaar and city centre.
