This town in Assam with two wildlife preserves and a UNESCO-listed park within its city limits, Golaghat also holds ancient ruins and Hindu and Christian heritage sites spanning the 17th to 19th centuries. One of Assam's oldest urban centres, it has been a tea-industry hub since the 19th century and retains a number of heritage buildings, including a British cemetery from 1876 and a Baptist church founded by American missionaries in 1898. The Dhansiri river, a Brahmaputra tributary, runs through the town.
