Goma is a city in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, on the northern shore of Lake Kivu, built largely on ancient lava flows from the Virunga volcanic range. Mount Nyiragongo, an active volcano, rises close to the north. The city hosts the annual Amani Festival and the cultural centre Foyer Culturel de Goma, and sits on the edge of Virunga National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its recent history has been shaped by conflict, including ongoing instability as of early 2025.
