A city on Tomini Bay in northern Sulawesi, Gorontalo is known for its strong Islamic heritage — sometimes called the "Porch of Medina" — and holds an unusual density of historic churches alongside its mosques, reflecting layers of colonial and religious history. The capital of Gorontalo Province since 2000, it traces its formal founding to 1728 under the Gorontalo Sultanate and sits close to mountains as well as the bay.
