Grytviken

South Georgia & South Sandwich Islands

The graves of polar explorers Ernest Shackleton and Frank Wild draw Antarctic cruise passengers to this former whaling station on South Georgia, a remote South Atlantic island. Founded in 1904 by Norwegian explorer Carl Anton Larsen at the head of King Edward Cove — the island's best harbour — Grytviken operated until 1966, when dwindling whale stocks forced its closure. The rusting station and a little museum now receive summer visitors, while the site's name, meaning "pot bay," recalls the seal-oil try pots found here by a 1902 Swedish expedition.
