Cave houses are among the most distinctive features of Guadix, a town on a high plain at the northern foothills of the Sierra Nevada in Granada province. Its historic centre holds a cathedral — the Catedral de la Encarnación, declared a cultural asset in 1931 — alongside the Alcazaba fortress, recognised the same year as a national artistic monument. The cathedral blends three architectural styles and draws comparison with those of Granada and Málaga. Three museums, including one dedicated to sacred art, round out the cultural offer.
