Gulu, the commercial hub of northern Uganda, sits roughly midway on the road between Kampala and Juba, making it a natural stopover for travellers crossing between Uganda and South Sudan. The city centre has a growing café and restaurant scene, driven in part by an influx of NGO workers and independent travellers in recent years. Gulu Airport serves the city, and a handful of historic attractions add reason to linger beyond a transit stop.
