Ha'il is a large city in northern Saudi Arabia shaped by the two prominent mountains that flank it — Jabal Aja and Jabal Salma — with the city arcing around Jabal Samra and bounded to the north and west by Jabal Aja's ridgelines. In the 19th and early 20th centuries it served as the capital of the Emirate of Jabal Shammar, ruled first by the Al Ali and then by the Al Rashid dynasty, whose influence at its peak extended across much of Najd before Ibn Saud ended their rule in 1921.
