Hairatan is an Afghan port city on the Amu Darya river, where the Afghanistan–Uzbekistan Friendship Bridge — built in 1982 during the Soviet era — connects the two countries across the river that forms their shared border. One of Afghanistan's principal trade and transit points, it sits in northern Balkh Province with the Uzbek city of Termez a short distance across the water. All foreign visitors require a valid Afghan travel visa to enter.
