Iraq
Halabja, in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, is known internationally as the site of the 1988 chemical attack on its Kurdish population, commemorated by a national monument that draws visitors paying their respects. The town sits at the foot of the Hawraman mountain ranges near the Iranian border, with the Sirwan river to the west, and has a market area and parks on its outskirts. It became the capital of its own governorate in 2014.
