Hankasalmi
Finland
This pocket-sized Finnish municipality in Central Finland sits across a landscape of nearly a hundred lakes, the largest being Kynsivesi-Leivonvesi, Armisvesi, and Kuuhankavesi, with the village centre on a narrow isthmus between two of them. The abundance of water draws a large summer cottage population — well over a thousand holiday cabins dot the shorelines — swelling the resident numbers considerably each warm season. Highway and rail connections serve the area, and it forms one half of the East Central Finland travel region alongside Konnevesi.
