This highland village in Armenia's Lori region, Hartagyugh sits at elevation in the Pambak mountain range and is home to a 19th-century Church of Saint Gregory the Illuminator. A kilometre to the east, the Saint Hovhannes Chapel has drawn pilgrims for centuries — destroyed and rebuilt three times under Soviet rule, it was last restored in 1958 and is now surrounded by hundreds of khachkars placed by visitors. The chapel is mentioned in the letters and poems of the Armenian poet Hovhannes Shiraz, and in the writings of the 20th-century mystic-philosopher George Gurdjieff.
