Sitting on the Meuse river in the French Ardennes, Haybes earned the nickname Haybes-la-Jolie from its slate-roofed architecture — the slate quarrying that once defined the village also shaped its neighbour Fumay. Destroyed at the very start of the First World War, the village was entirely rebuilt in the 1920s. Today it offers scenic river views, a handful of cafés and restaurants, and access to the wider Ardennes landscape, with UNESCO World Heritage sites in the surrounding region.
